Professional Values
As a therapist, my agenda is your growth. The foundation blocks of my practice are integrity, stability, predictability and consistency. Therefore, you can count on me to be an honest, kind, participant in your work. I will remember what you say from session to session. I will take you and your life seriously with compassion, competence and good judgment.
I provide structure, an atmosphere conducive to reflection, a sense of humor, and an attentive presence. I adhere to a strict code of ethics that include the following obligations: to act at all times in your best interest; to respect your rights as an individual; to recognize my professional limits and communicate them to you; and to regard the therapeutic process between us as a joint effort.
Effective therapy requires that I actively participate with you as you work and grow. Therapy is a process that requires openness and commitment from both therapist and client. What this means is that we will often talk about your feelings, about experiences and relationships in your life now and in the past, and about your thoughts and ideas. My selection of techniques is based upon your unique needs and circumstances here and now, upon influences from the past, which may be involved, and upon your goals for counseling. My techniques include but are not limited to:
Active listening and reflecting
Emotional presence and attentiveness
Generating, selecting and evaluating possibilities for action
Practicing new response styles
Discovering and correcting self-defeating thought patterns
Journal-writing and selected readings
My selection of techniques is based upon your unique needs and circumstances here and now, upon influences from the past, which may be involved, and upon your goals for counseling. The frequency of our sessions and the length of the course of counseling also depend upon your needs, goals and circumstances
My primary commitment is to your health and well-being. Ultimately, though, you have the right to control your own therapy and your own life. You have the right to ask questions any time you do not understand what is taking place in the session. It is your right to end or to take a break from counseling at any time, though it is best for us to discuss this should you make that choice.
